Fast becoming a popular family holiday tradition, BalletMet's Nutcracker is the perfect balm to soothe a hectic holiday season, and to bond with your nearest and dearest. Gorgeous costumes and sets, magnificent dancing combined with Tchaikovsky's glorious score all combine to make this a show that you'd be crazy to pass up.
The BalletMet has been behind world-class dance theatre since 1978, and this season's annual production of The Nutcracker is no exception. The Nutcracker is a feast for your eyes and ears and a family treat this Christmas!
The story is set in the late 1800s Germany, where our adolescent heroine Clara is celebrating Christmas Eve with her well-heeled family. When gifted with a beautiful wooden nutcracker doll, she is overjoyed - up until her boisterous younger brother manages to break it. Bereft, she cradles the broken doll in her arms, and eventually falls asleep under the family Christmas tree. When she wakes up, she finds that the tree has mysteriously tripled in size, and that an army of life-sized mice are threatening to take over the house. Enter a troupe of tin soldiers, led by none other than her nutcracker doll, who has magically become human. With her help, he manages to banish the Mouse King, and in thanks, offers to take Clara on an adventure.
The journey then follows Clara and her Nutcracker Prince to the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy - a magical world filled with colorful characters that are sure to enchant older fans and young alike. This classical ballet is performed by a cast of over 100 dancers set to the sounds of Tchaikovsky's beloved score.
